Buffering is almost never the channel. It is the pipe, the player, or the box — and in that order of likelihood. Below is the sequence our support desk works through, cheapest test first, so you stop guessing.
Plug it in first. Yes, really.
Ethernet, or the device within two metres of the router. If the stalls stop, the wireless link was the whole problem and the rest of this page is irrelevant until you fix that. A 4K feed wants a steady 25 Mbps. A Wi-Fi signal showing full bars can still hand you 6 Mbps once the neighbours’ networks start competing.
Buffer: raise it, don’t lower it
a popular player app Pro → Settings → Player Settings → buffer 3 to 5 seconds. a player app → Settings → Playback → Buffer size. Most players ship with a one-second buffer, which is fine for a dedicated line and hopeless on a house connection that is also carrying three phones.
Hardware decoding is not always faster in practice
It is faster when the stream arrives cleanly. When it arrives in lumps, software decoding rides it out. Settings → Decoder → SW. If the stutter goes away, your GPU was the bottleneck and the network was fine.
Try the FHD version of the same channel
Most lists carry two or three bitrates of the same feed. If only UHD stalls, the line is healthy and the device cannot decode that profile in real time. Fire TV Stick Lite and 2019-era panels do this constantly.
Clear cache, not data
the mobile OS: Settings → Apps → player → Storage → Clear cache. Clearing data wipes your playlist and login, so don’t reach for it first. Fire OS hides the same thing under Manage Installed Applications.
Kill the VPN for ten minutes
A VPN adds a hop and usually caps throughput below the stream bitrate. If buffering stops with it off, keep it off or move to WireGuard. OpenVPN running on a cheap router CPU is the usual offender.
Heat
A stick jammed behind a hot panel throttles after twenty or thirty minutes, which is exactly the “fine at first, then breaks” pattern people report. Use the HDMI extender that came in the box.
Count the streams
The entry plan carries one connection. Two people on one line buffer each other and it looks identical to a network fault. Check before you blame anything.
Power-cycle the router properly
Thirty seconds off, not a soft reboot. That flushes a saturated NAT table, which is a genuine cause on a router that has been up for months holding dozens of streaming sockets.
How you know it is the line and not you
A healthy line opens a channel in under three seconds and holds for the session. If you still stall every few minutes after all nine steps, stop tuning and open a ticket. Send the device model, the app, and the exact error string. Support can see the line from their side in about the time it takes you to type it.

Perguntas frequentes
Why does it only buffer in the evening?
Evening is peak. The local loop and the ISP uplink are both congested at once. Wired, a higher buffer and FHD instead of UHD usually carry you through. If it happens every night at the same hour, report it — the pattern is diagnostic.
Does a VPN help with buffering?
Usually it hurts. A VPN adds a hop and caps throughput. It only helps when your ISP throttles streaming traffic specifically, and then only on WireGuard rather than OpenVPN.
Is 25 Mbps enough for 4K?
For one stream with nothing else running, yes. Two 4K streams plus phones on a 50 Mbps line will still stall, and no setting changes that.
